Understanding PECSYS® Report Filters: AND and OR

The key to understanding report filters is in the “AND” vs. “OR” terminology.

In our everyday lives, we sometimes use the words ‘And’ and ‘Or’ differently than we do when creating reports. For example, if we were to say: “I want to see a list of all adult patients who have been seen within the last 3 months and pediatric patients who have been seen in the last 6 months.” Here the word “and” is being used to combine groups, but this is NOT how the word “and” is used to create reports in PECSYS®. In PECSYS® Report generation, the word “OR” is used to combine groups. So, the statement above becomes “I want to see a list of patients who are either adults who have been seen in the last 3 months OR are children who have been seen in the last 6 months.” Conversely, in creating PECSYS® Reports, the word “AND” is used to restrict or shorten the list that is produced. For example, “I want to see a list of patients who are adults who have been seen in the last 3 months AND are due for an immunization.”

Relative to the PECSYS® Diabetes Summary report, if we look at a report that says: “Show me all patients who have DM type 1 AND DM type 2,” this statement actually means the report will only include patients who have BOTH DM type 1 and 2. Patients with only one of type 1 or just type 2 will be excluded from the report. If we need a report that includes patients who have any type of diabetes we need a report that uses the word “OR”: “Show me all patients who have DM type 1 OR DM type 2,“ Therefore, it is important to place the “AND” and the “OR” in the correct spot.
